AUTHOR INFORMATION

Hari Achanta was born in Madras. He was educated at Rishi Valley School, AP and Loyola College, Chennai.
He moved to Bangalore to pursue a business career in which he was engaged for more than three decades. He recently retired from mainstream activities and his role now involves guiding and mentoring.
For more than a quarter century, Hari has been a keen golfer playing regularly at the Karnataka Golf Association in Bangalore. He has also been a member of the Kodaikanal Golf Club for nearly 30 years.
Along the way, Hari qualified as a golf referee at the TARS School at the R&A in St Andrews and also became a certified USGA Course Rater. He has refereed many tournaments and now is an instructor at IGU's referee certification programmes. He is also one of the most experienced course raters in India having rated golf courses all over the country.
Hari was the editor of Golfline for three years, India's first golf magazine, from 2005-2008.
Hari intends to spend his retirement playing a lot of golf and writing more books on the great game.
I was born and bred in hot and humid Madras. Summer holidays were invariably spent in the hill station of Kodaikanal. The cool weather, the gardens bursting with flowers, the mist and the soft rain, were a marked contrast to the city. We felt we were going to a special place where green grass grew untended even on the sidewalks; where invigorating pine-scented air wafted everywhere and the water tasted sweet. This resulted in a lingering and lifelong fascination for hill stations.
Many of the hill stations of India are blessed with fine old clubs and golf courses. These golf courses
are a unique avatar. This genre is not found too commonly in other parts of the world and a majority of those in India exist in the south.
This book is a record of a journey through the hills of South India playing in and writing about these golf courses. It is meant for golfers and nongolfers alike–the magnificent pictures in the book can be enjoyed by everyone.
Sadly, the hills are being degraded and I hope the book motivates the golfing community to actively
participate in putting a stop to irresponsible growth, deforestation, destruction of bio-diversity and wildlife habitats to ensure rejuvenation of these beautiful hills. If this is not done on a war footing, the hill stations, their clubs and golf courses will cease to have an appeal.
I hope they are protected and preserved, so that future generations may enjoy them for centuries to come.
